NBN’S TOP PICKS

Here are the games I’m most excited for this week:

NBA – Houston at Golden State (Saturday at 8:30 p.m. on ABC)

A rematch of last year’s Western Conference Finals, some of the game’s best will be on the same court. James Harden is having one of the best offensive seasons in league history, recently matching Wilt Chamberlain’s streak of 31-straight games with at least 30 points. On the other side is Golden State, and the back-to-back champs need no introduction. Houston is in the heat of the mess that is the middle of the Western Conference, and every win counts for home-court advantage. Expect fireworks in this one.

MCBB – Illinois at #22 Wisconsin (Monday at 8 p.m. on FS1)

Illinois may be below .500, but this team is playing like it’s tournament-caliber the last few weeks. Wins against some of the Big Ten’s best have proven this team’s vast improvement since the start of the season, with Ayo Dosunmu turning himself into the third-best point guard in the conference and Giorgi Bezhanishvili breaking out. Their aggressive defense forces poor decisions and turnovers, but Wisconsin is the least turnover-prone team in the Big Ten (9.2 per game). I’m curious to see if Illinois’s defensive intensity is able to take over the game against another top conference opponent or if Wisconsin has enough poise to hold off the streaking Illini.

MCBB – #8 North Carolina at #1 Duke (Wednesday at 9 p.m. on ESPN)

The rivalry speaks for itself. Add in ACC regular season title implications and two of the best teams in the country going at it, and you’ve got one of the best matchups of the entire year. Duke has some of the biggest names in the sport right now on its team, and the legend of its freshmen phenoms’ legend grew even more with the improbable comeback at Louisville last week. Even with all of the Blue Devils’s momentum, you can’t count out Carolina, the only team scoring more than Duke in the ACC and the ninth-most efficient offense in the country according to KenPom. We will see how well both teams will be able to run the floor in a game that should turn into a track meet.

MCBB – Wofford at Furman (Saturday at 4 p.m. on ESPN3)

The SoCon is for real this year, and this is one of the marquee matchups of its season. Wofford has steadily built an impressive resume that could get it into the NCAA Tournament even without a SoCon Tournament title, but Furman still needs help to get on the right side of the bubble. With its non-conference and recent wins over East Tennessee State and UNC Greensboro, the Paladins could make it happen if it can ruin Wofford’s perfect conference record. It won’t be easy, though, as Wofford brings one of the most efficient offenses in the country into Timmons Arena, headlined by Fletcher Magee and his nearly 20 points per game. Furman will have to defend the three-point line against the lethal Wofford perimeter players, something it did a decent job of in its 59-54 loss to the Terriers in the first matchup Jan. 19. It’s do or die time for the ‘Dins now.

MCBB –  #12 Kansas at #14 Texas Tech (Saturday at 8 p.m. on ESPN)

Kansas has won 14-straight Big 12 regular season championships, but that streak is in jeopardy this year. Texas Tech is one of the Jayhawks’s biggest challengers, and the Red Raiders will be seeking revenge for the 79-63 beating it took in Lawrence on Feb. 2 in a game Kansas controlled from the start. But Kansas has been a much different team away from Allen Fieldhouse, and Texas Tech’s defense is good enough to stop any offense in its tracks. This game will be vital in determining the conference’s king, either putting one more nail in the Kansas coffin or ending Texas Tech’s bid for its first Big 12 title.

MCBB – #10 Michigan State at #7 Michigan (Sunday at 3:45 p.m. on CBS)

The Big Ten has waited for this game all season, and finally it’s here. Along with Purdue, these have looked like the best teams the conference has to offer, and for a portion of the season looked to be running away from the rest of the pack. Both teams have taken steps back in the last few weeks, but Michigan State in particular has looked back in form as of late. But the Spartans will have to go without Nick Ward and his inside presence as the big man sits out with an injury, opening the door for Michigan to dominate in the post. And to make this all the juicier, these two teams hate each other. Should be a fun one.

WCBB – #1 Baylor at #20 Iowa State (Saturday at 4 p.m. on FSN)

Baylor hasn’t lost since Dec. 15 and has been dominant in its weeks-long winning streak, clobbering most of its schedule. But traveling to Ames might be its most difficult game remaining. Iowa State is the second-highest scoring team in the Big 12 (behind Baylor), and Bridget Carleton is putting up more than 20 points per game as the league’s leading scorer. The Bears cruised 84-69 in these teams’ first matchup in Waco, but Hilton Coliseum can be a whole other animal.

INTERNATIONAL – 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers (All day Thursday, Friday and Sunday on ESPN+)

Forty-four games over the week will help determine the field for the 2019 FIBA World Cup, slated to tip off August 31. Want to see how the game is growing across the globe? This is your chance to see countries you never even thought about playing basketball showing the best they have to offer. Just interested in seeing the world’s premier basketball countries? You can catch USA, Spain, Argentina, Serbia and more during the three days of action. If you’re a lover of wide lanes and uniquely-designed basketball, this is the week for you.
