Wright State Non-Conference Schedule Review

Wright State unveiled its non-conference schedule last month, and it will play Western Kentucky, Kent State, at Toledo and in the Gulf Coast Showcase.

Wright State, the top regular season team in the Horizon League a year ago, will play in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Florida, one of the premier mid-major tournament.

The Raiders will face Weber State in their first game of the event Nov. 25, then challenge either Murray State or La Salle the following day depending upon the results of both matchups. The rest of the tournament’s field includes Northeastern, South Alabama, Drake and Miami (OH). Each participant is guaranteed three games. As part of the “Campus Games” portion of the showcase, Urbana comes to Wright State on Nov. 20.

For the fourth year in a row, Wright State and Toledo will do battle, a massive opportunity for both in-state foes to pick up a solid victory for its resume, which can make a huge difference in NCAA Tournament or selection for other postseason tournaments. Last year, Wright State won the showdown at home, 84-74, its second-straight win in the series. The Raiders will head north toward the Ohio-Michigan border to take on the Rockets on Dec. 21 to end their non-conference slate.

Other marquee matchups include Kent State coming to the Nutter Center on Nov. 16 and Western Kentucky making the same trek Dec. 3. The Golden Flashes are fresh off a CIT invitation and did well with their non-conference schedule last season, and the Hilltoppers keep racking up talent through head coach Rick Stansbury’s tactics. These could end up being a couple of the toughest games on Wright State’s entire docket.

Wright State will also play against Miami (OH) in a guaranteed game Nov. 9 in Oxford, the 34th meeting between the programs. The RedHawks took the 2018 edition, 65-62, their second victory in a row against the Raiders. These teams have played two possession-or-fewer games every year since 2015. Hopefully that trend continues.
