From less travel and more conference play to a changing of the guard at Notre Dame and the continued dominance of ACC champs NC State, the 2020-2021 season was one for the books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that&#8217;s all behind us now. It&#8217;s time to look forward. When you have a top WNBA talent like the 6-foot-5 Cunane to run an offense through, everything else simply falls into place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Elissa Cunane 2019-20 Season Highlights | NC State Center\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/etbq7maQsZQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Add in returning players like Jakia Brown-Turner, Jada Boyd, and Raina Perez, and you have a recipe for success that is going to cook its way to the top of the ACC standings for the third year in a row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"the-contenders-georgia-tech-virginia-tech-notre-dame-florida-state\">The Contenders: Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Florida State<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"georgia-tech\">Georgia Tech<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Head coach:<\/strong> Nell Fortner (3rd season)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2020-21 record:<\/strong> 17-9 (12-6 in ACC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conference finish:<\/strong> 3rd<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nell Fortner is a coach with the talent to instantly make any team better. Before she arrived on the scene at Georgia Tech, the school&#8217;s women&#8217;s basketball team did not have a winning ACC record for five seasons straight. Fortner has a winning record in both of her seasons up until this point, including a Sweet 16 last March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk about making a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">THEY\u2019RE BAAAAAAACCCCCKKKKKK!!!! \ud83d\udc1d\ud83c\udfc0\ud83d\ude08 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LP23HPCNRl\">pic.twitter.com\/LP23HPCNRl<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Georgia Tech Women&#39;s Basketball (@GTWBB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GTWBB\/status\/1376975525214879751?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 30, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With seniors Kierra Fletcher and Lorela Cujab deciding to come back for a fifth year, Georgia Tech is returning all five starters in a season where many teams are having a high player turnover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"virginia-tech\">Virginia Tech<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Head coach:<\/strong> Kenny Brooks (6th season)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2020-21 record:<\/strong> 15-10 (8-8 in ACC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conference finish:<\/strong> 7th<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aisha Sheppard &#8211; who was third in the ACC women&#8217;s basketball in scoring last season with 17.7 points per game &#8211; made the decision to use that extra eligibility thanks to the pandemic to return for another go around with the Hokies. That made a bit of a difference to their outlook on the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Aisha Sheppard 2020-21 Regular Season Highlights | Virginia Tech Guard\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BJD_X7AdR_Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheppard&#8217;s return makes it easy for coach Kenny Brooks, who now has all five starters coming back and his top scoring guard looking to make another leap in her career. All-ACC center Elizabeth Kitley should have a massive impact on the floor once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"notre-dame\">Notre Dame<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Head coach:<\/strong> Niele Ivey (2nd season)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2020-21 record:<\/strong> 10-10 (8-7 in ACC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conference finish:<\/strong> 6th<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Niele Ivey did not have an easy go of it in her first season as the head coach for the Fighting Irish. Niele Ivey has also gone on the record saying that last March Madness was the only one she ever wants to experience from the outside looking in, so if that attitude transfers over to the rest of the team, Notre Dame could be in for a bounce back season for the ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"florida-state\">Florida State<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Head coach:<\/strong> Sue Semrau (24th season)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2020-21 record:<\/strong> 10-9 (9-7 in ACC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conference finish:<\/strong> 5th<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continuity plays a big role in the NCAA, but it&#8217;s often overlooked because people are naturally drawn to young talent and the next big thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Florida State has that continuity in spades, returning all five starters and basically every key player it had last year. Give the Seminoles another offseason to mesh even more, and you are looking at a team that uses superior teamsmanship to make a dark horse run for the ACC title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sue Semrau has returned to Florida State and is grateful for the support: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ETAcN0sZm5\">https:\/\/t.co\/ETAcN0sZm5<\/a><\/p>&mdash; womenshoopsworld (@hoopism) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hoopism\/status\/1380715211439570948?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 10, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that, long-time bench boss Sue Semrau is back after taking a hiatus to care for a family member, and she always has a trick or two up her sleeve.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"stuck-in-purgatory-syracuse-north-carolina-miami-duke-wake-forest-pittsburgh-clemson\">Stuck in Purgatory: SYracuse, North Carolina, Miami, Duke, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, Clemson<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"syracuse\">Syracuse<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Head coach:<\/strong> Vonn Read (<a href=\"https:\/\/news.syr.edu\/blog\/2021\/08\/04\/vonn-read-to-serve-as-acting-head-coach-of-syracuse-womens-basketball-for-2021-22-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1st season, acting head coach<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2020-21 record:<\/strong> 15-9 (9-7 in ACC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conference finish:<\/strong> 4th<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turnover is always a bit of a big deal in college basketball, but Syracuse has had it in spades this past offseason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quentin Hillsman &#8211; who was the head coach for the Orange &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/syracuse\/basketball\/quentin-hillsman-resigns-syracuse-head-coach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resigned amidst an investigation into his conduct within the organization<\/a>. With four recruits who just played in the Jordan Brand Classic, UNC looks like it&#8217;s in good hands for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"miami\">Miami<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Head coach:<\/strong> Katie Meier (17th season)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2020-21 record:<\/strong> 11-11 (8-10 in ACC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conference finish:<\/strong> 9th<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another season, another middle of the pack finish looks to be in store for Miami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since losing Beatrice Mompremier to the WNBA Draft a couple of seasons ago, Miami has seemed to be on the cusp of making some noise in the ACC, but its talent level has just not quite been high enough to push into that top tier of teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">DESTINY HARDEN \ud83c\udfa5 SEASON 3<br><br>Double-digit Des went off this season with new career highs in scoring, made field goals and minutes and led the team in rebounds. \ud83d\udcaa <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8PqW42rpJU\">pic.twitter.com\/8PqW42rpJU<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Canes Women&#39;s BBall (@CanesWBB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CanesWBB\/status\/1403472114976530444?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 11, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Forward Destiny Harden may look to make another leap in the coming season, and that would be a massive boon to a Miami team that has lacked that go-to talent in the past season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"duke\">Duke<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Head coach:<\/strong> Kara Lawson (2nd season)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2020-21 record:<\/strong> 3-1 (0-1 in ACC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conference finish:<\/strong> 14th<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a <em>very<\/em> COVID-shortened season that saw them playing (and losing) only one game in the ACC, the Blue Devils are coming back with a vengeance in a way that only those top-tier schools can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Duke had a busy offseason, to say the least. It had 12 scholarship players at the start of August and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukechronicle.com\/article\/2021\/08\/duke-womens-basketball-shayeann-day-wilson-kara-lawson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">somehow added another top-50 recruit after that<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"CP3 Of High School Hoops!? Shy Day-Wilson Is Done Being UNDERRATED! \ud83d\udcaf\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KyGGZPIgyKo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That recruit is Shayeann Day-Wilson, a 5-foot-5 Canadian guard hailing from Toronto. She brings even more national team pedigree to Duke, as she was a major contributor for a Canada U19 team that came fifth at the U19 World Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s time for Duke to regain some of that fear that is commonly associated with the name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 id=\"wake-forest\">Wake Forest<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Head coach:<\/strong> Jen Hoover (11th season)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2020-21 record:<\/strong> 12-13 (8-10 in ACC)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conference finish:<\/strong> 10th<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jewel Spear is a player to keep an eye on for the underwhelming Demon Deacons this upcoming season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spear recently finished representing Team USA at the FIBA U19&nbsp; Basketball World Cup.
