Seton Hall Arrives in First Elite Eight in 29 Years

The whole international pandemic thing that’s going down forced the 2020 March Madness to be cancelled. Or so you thought.

The NCAA is skipping this year’s tournament at all levels, but /r/CollegeBasketball has sponsored its own alternative Men’s Division I tournament: Reddit March Madness. Streamed exclusively on YouTube and executed with a college basketball video game from almost 15 years ago, this year’s March Madness is sure to be unpredictable and full of really dumb turnovers.

Nothing But Nylon is providing the exclusive* coverage of the event from the bedroom of our headquarters. Don’t miss any of the real* quotes and bone-breaking analysis that you’ll only find here because of how exclusive* this content is.

Pirates Make First Elite Eight Appearance in 29 Years

It has been a wild ride of a campaign for Seton Hall, starting off the year 6-4, then rattling off 10 wins in a row. The Pirates finished the regular season 5-5 in their last 10 games, though it was just enough to claim a share of the Big East crown.

But the team certainly got back to mid-season form once Reddit March Madness hit. To get here, the No. 3 seed went through three double-digit seeds to get one game away from its first Final Four since losing in the national championship game in 1989.

When we last saw head coach Kevin Willard, he was in the middle of an emergency situation following the Sweet 16 victory. When I caught up with him yesterday, he told me the unfortunate news.

“I … I didn’t make it,” Willard admitted, ashamed but honest, averting eye contact. “It was wet.”

He had clearly cleaned up since, and so to change the subject, I asked him about what it meant to have Seton Hall this deep in the tournament.

“It’s an amazing thing,” he said, eager to get off the topic of his accident. “It’s a testament to the amount of work these kids put in each and every day, adjusting to this tournament being played with one fewer dimension than they’re accustomed to and how fortunate our draw has been.”

For senior guard Myles Powell, this is his last chance at a national championship before leaving the college game. Why not have it be the first for Seton Hall, too?

“I want to make history, for myself, for this program and for this area,” Powell said with bravado and confidence. “I want to be the one to bring glory to whatever city or town Seton Hall is in. This place at Seton Hall is in has been so important to me through all four of my years here, and even though I’m not quite sure what town it’s in, I know it’s in New Jersey. And that’s close enough.”

Seton Hall will play No. 1 seed Baylor in the East Regional Final in Charlotte on Monday at 5:30 p.m. EST. Be sure to follow along with Nothing But Nylon’s comprehensively exclusive* coverage of the 2020 Reddit March Madness.
