Rose was one of the top recruits in the Class of 2007, ultimately opting for Memphis for what would be only his one season in the college game.
Rose was one of the premier players in the nation throughout the 2007-08 men’s college basketball season. Averaging 14.9 points per game, he was second in scoring on a Tigers team that lost just two games all season long, and added another 4.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds per contest, too. Rose was crucial in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, scoring at least 17 points in all six of Memphis’s games in the tournament, including a 25-point performance in the Final Four against UCLA, which the Tigers won, 78-63. Memphis would lose in the national championship game to Kansas in overtime, 75-68.
The Chicago Bulls selected Derrick Rose with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft after the freshman opting out of his remaining college eligibility. Now 13 years later, Rose is still hanging around the league, currently playing for the New York Knicks. The Knicks are Rose’s fifth NBA franchise, which includes two stints with the New York team, the Bulls, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Detroit Pistons.
In his now decade-plus long career, Derrick Rose is averaging 18.6 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game, as well as shooting 82.7 percent from the free-throw line and amassing a 45.5 percent clip from the field in 621 games (as of March 27, 2021). He was awarded the 2008-09 Rookie of the Year, won MVP in the 2010-11 season, and has been named an NBA All-Star three times (2010, 2011, 2012).
