Video: Baltimore Hoopers Rebuild Local Courts

In a short video from 60 Second Docs, the work of two Baltimore men, Davon Moore and Christian Collins, to rehab courts in their area is highlighted.

Davon Moore and Christian Collins love their hometown and hoops, so they’re bringing them together to better their community.

The two Baltimore residents launched a GoFundMe on May 29 to rebuild basketball courts in their area, with all proceeds going toward the supplies needed to do the work, according to their page.

On Wednesday, 60 Second Docs released a short video covering the two men’s work. In the video, Moore and Collins explain the basic motivations behind the project.

“To bring love and basketball back to the community and rebuild Baltimore,” Moore said in the video.

According to their GoFundMe page, they started using their own money and decided to open funding to the public after receiving plenty of support. The money is used to buy new rims and equipment to install them, paint and wood for backboards and the kit to draw lines on courts.

The duo is responsible for four courts being rehabbed so far, but they have plenty more to do. In the video, Collins said they want to restore all the basketball courts in Baltimore.

They can already feel the impact their work is having. One minute after putting one rim up, kids were already playing on it, Moore said.

“To see kids outside playing basketball, I can feel my work push and push and push right through close to their hearts,” Collins said. “What would these kids be doing if they didn’t have basketball?”

The Spin on Baltimore Court Rehabilitation

Earlier this week, Nothing But Nylon published an article on Project Backboard, a mission from Dan Peterson aimed at rehabbing courts across the country into colorful murals with fully-functioning equipment. Hopefully, this is a theme that continue throughout the basketball community, in America and otherwise.

Outdoor basketball courts can be spaces for communities to come together and enjoy the spirit of sport in an uninhibited fashion. It gives kids a positive and healthy way to spend their time, and can foster important life skills, such as socialization and leadership.

When outdoor courts are beaten down and destroyed, it kills the influences they could have on our world. It can be difficult for individuals to figure out how to make the world a better place, but it doesn’t have to be as grandiose as some might think. Peterson, Moore and Collins have figured that out, and they’re changing the world one court at a time. That’s something we should all be thankful for.
